Bikepacking: The Curse of Cluny
#camping #campervans #bikepacking
An overnight bikepacking trip in the Scottish Highlands in search of a 500 year old standing stone.
The gear I use for bikepacking is largely made up of old backpacking gear. I'm in the oprocess of renewing a lot of my gear and making it more bikepacking specific. At the moment what I'm using is as follows.
Bike: Whyte Dean Gravel bike with a Brooks saddle
Bike Bags: Apidura Handlebar Bag and Bar Bag and a large Revelate Saddle Bag. Topeak accessory bag.
Tent: Alpkit Aeronaut 1
Sleeping Bag: The North Face Trail Lite
Sleeping Mat: Alpkit Airo 120
Stove: Alpkit Kraku
Pot: MSR Titan
Mug: Sea to Summit Detour Stainless Steel Collapsible
Titanium spoon
50-year old Sierra Cup
Warmwear: Rab Cirrus Flex jacket
I'm based in the Scottish Highlands and I use a VW campervan to access the great outdoors, where I climb hills, ride my e-bike or gravel bike and just visit some of those places I've never been to. I've been climbing hills and mountains all over the world for 50 years and I'm a former editor of Climber Magazine and The Great Outdoors Magazine.

There are lots of issues when people take camper vans around Scotland. Bad driving, slow driving, bad parking, dangerous parking, litter and rubbish dumped in lay-bys, toilets being emptied into rivers and lochs as well as at the side of the road. The sense of entitlement is palpable from many van drivers. The constant “ well we spend money in the local economy” excuse. No you don’t. You look for cheap takeaways or cook in your van. Then all they seem to do is complain about having to pay for parking, overnight or during the day. They all seem to do everything they can to not spend money locally. If you don’t have a good experience then don’t come back. It’s simple really.

    • @CameronMcNeishOutdoors
      @CameronMcNeishOutdoors 2 дні тому

@@colgra1100 All those issues you quote can also be laid at the door of people driving cars, and I include local highlanders in that as well as tourists. Are you a campervan driver? If not how do you know campervan owners don’t spend money? I use my campervan most weeks and seem to spend a lot of time in shops, petrol stations, pubs and restaurants. I live in the highlands and it’s not just campervan owners that cause issues yet they are the ones constantly discriminated against.

Thank you for sharing this Cameron. The more time and miles that pass the more fascinated I become about the human connections and stories we have entwined with the landscapes we pass through. Your telling of this story here a perfect example. How many people have passed nearby that almost-hidden stone, unaware of the lives connected to it? I've spent the last eighteen months backpacking through the hills and places of countries, visiting their historical sites that the inspiring historian Bettany Hughes features in her TV series Treasures of The World, and she talks about how a 4,000 year old earing for example, can be a "short circuit" back through time to people who were essentially, no different to us. Stories in the places, literally beneath our feet.

I switched to Gaslight Propane cylinders in my caravan after finding Calor had stopped producing the 6kg Gaslite bottles. I now have two 5kg bottles in my caravan, they are lighter and readily available from Homebase stores nationwide as well as many others. The switch involved fitting a new pigtail with a 27mm clip on connection, a simple job to do. Changing bottles is also much simpler, the connector simply lifts off with the press of a button. Calor have shot them selves in the foot as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, you speak my mind. We have had enough of those who, by their rouge behavior, spoil the right to camp freely to everyone else. I support your notion that we all have influence and can put a stop to it. I have started to ruthlessly report those who violate camping etiquette. I do this, because I want to protect the 80% that abide by the rules from the 20% who don't and spoil it for everyone. I report to the police and to social media, I approach the individual politely and point out what impact their behavior has on the communities image. Those who don't give a shit are reported at the fullest extend (police, social media, me harassing them until they leave). Those who are open for a discussion, I try to sit down with and have a talk about why we all have a responsibility to improve our image! We all need to do this more, and not turn a blind eye towards those who misbehave!

We agree wholeheartedly. We recently visited Tomintoul for the HIghland games. On our journey North we stayed at Hawick in the designated free motorhome stopover with water and CDP. We spent money in the local shops, cafes etc and visited the local parks. Then a stay at Dalwhinnie at 'The Apiary Cafe', again free if you buy a coffee and cake ( which was delicious, and highly recommend). Motorhomers must use their common sense, use the facilities that are being offered, and contribute to the local economy. Keep up the good work Cameron!!
